Reports that EU Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner Withdraws from UNESCO Run

There are several recent media reports that Benita Ferrero-Waldner has withdrawn her candidacy for the post of UNESCO Director General.
That would appear to leave three candidates in the race:
  • Farouk Hosny
  • Irina Bokova
  • Ivonne Baki

  1. Correct, she withdrew from the "horse race" with somewhat unclear message as to her preferences who should deserve the post of DG. Two questions:
    1. Where the votes for Benita would go - to Ivonne or Irina? Are some of them likely to go to Farouk? In other words, who is more likely to qualify for the last round on Tuesday? Ivonne or Irina along with Farouk?
    2. In case at the fifth round Farouk and Ivonne (or Irina) get 29 votes each, what happens? New candidates are likely to show up?

Well, Bedjaoui is still in, accumulating humiliation upon humiliation, just to spite his own president. What an ignominious end to an illustrious career! Perhaps he's counting on a 29-29 tie so that he can ride in on his white charger and convince the misguided 58 that he is their saviour!
